The Mediators offer a service which ensures that children’s interests remain central to the decision making process. It ensures that the child or young person is heard and that they understand the decisions which will affect them. This is known as Direct Child Consultation.
D.C.C is only undertaken with the consent of both parents. It is generally suitable for children approximately 5 years old and upwards and it will be wholly dependent on the individual child. The mediator will see the child on their own without the parents being present; any parent can be assured this will be undertaken in a sensitive, friendly and caring manner. It will be made clear to the child that anything they say will be confidential. It will be up to the child to decide what information will be relayed to their parents.
By engaging children in DCC the child will be given a voice even though they will be made aware that the ultimate decision will not lie with them. Expressing themselves can be cathartic and empowering. Another possible benefit is it allows the child the opportunity to think about their feelings in a safe, secure and confidential environment where they can control what can and cannot be imparted to their parents. This can greatly aid the decisions that need to made by the parents.
